The Beast

I talk about how our hollers hide the secrets of drug addiction, child abuse, and the health of our people while the beauty of our land is unparalleled. We are plagued with obesity, diabetes, cancer and a whole host of other medical conditions. We have led the country in drug overdoses and death for more than a decade. Because of the drug epidemic children are taken from mothers at birth or out of their homes by Child Protective Services.

In contrast we have the oldest mountain range in the country with unbelievable skiing, fishing, white water rafting, hunting, kayaking, and hiking. Our flowers that bloom in the spring is so vibrant that the colors pop against a snow melting backdrop. Driving down dirt road between two cornfields in the dead heat of summer at dusk is one of the most beautiful sights you’ll see. Sitting around a bonfire listening to the same tall tales and suddenly having an impromptu bluegrass concert is almost expected. We clog and clap and we know every word to Wayfaring Stranger when the banjo player decides to start plucking. When a man at the head of the holler is in need the man at the mouth of the holler and all in between will come to his side.
